ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Welcome and thank you for joining ustoday. This is read your Bible devotional and we are reading through the Bibleany year. This ten to fifteen minute daily devotional with pastor Brad Grinald's willkeep your heart in mind in God's word. Well, this is a hammock.I'm sure you can see it. I Love Hammocks. Hammocks are greatplace to rest. We're going to be talking today about rest. Have youever stayed up late working on something one night and you just couldn't go tobed until the work was complete? You really couldn't rest. Even if youdid go to bed, you wouldn't rest. You just something concerned you until itwas complete, and once it was complete, then you're able to goto bed and your rest was sweet.

I've done that many of nights withmy children, especially on Christmas Eve, staying up late trying to get aproject done and the thought creeps into my mind, oh, I'm so sleepy, I could just go lay down for a few hours and get up earlyand completed. And if I were ever to do so, I would laydown and I would us not be able to rest. I had to getback up and completed. But once I completed it. Then I laid downin my rest. Was Sweet. Actually. We see that in scripture. Todayare reading for the day again, wherein day two is we're reading throughthe Bible this year, but our reading for the day was genesis three throughfive, and in Genesis three, of course, we have that incredible storyof Adam and Eve and what occurred there when they sinned against God. Infact, in Verse Twenty One, it...

...says the Lord God made coats ofskin and clothed them. Now what's interesting about this is as you go backto genesis one and two, you see that on days one and day twoand day three and day four and day five and day six, God madethings, God created, God work. But on day seven, after Godhad completed his work, after everything was perfect, after it was pristine,he rested. There was no more work to do. Everything was perfect. The creation was perfect, the garden he created for Adam and Eve to enjoywas perfect, the world he created for Adam and eve and their progenate toenjoy with perfect. The universe he created for Adam and Eve to enjoy wasperfect. Everything was perfect. So God rested and God had been at restwith his creation up until this day.

Scripture doesn't tell us how many daysit was. We really don't know. We can assume that it was numerousdays because we're told that Adam and Eve walked with God in the cool ofthe day. So this was something that they would have been used to.It would have been something normal. They would have done it numerous occasions. However many days, weeks, months, years that had passed, we findsomething interesting occurring in genesis three. Adam and Eve sin. In fact,in Genesis three it is recognized that men's realization of his nakedness is a realizationof good and evil, understanding the knowledge of good and evil. He atefrom the truth and as a realization he had seen. So you have boththis realization of good and evil and you...

...have seen. Both of these wererequired, the knowledge of good and evil as well as the sin itself. Now what God had told Adam before he seined is in the day, ifyou eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in that day, you will surely die. Then we see here that God had been restbut he made coats of skin and clothed Adam and eve. So Adam andEve's sin, their nakedness, what they had done wrong as symbolize for theirnecktness, God would cover for yet the Hebrew word for a cover is literallymeans to atone, and so God would atone for their sin and place thiscovering to cover over the sin that they...

...had committed. God's love bound himto go back to work. He had been at rest, but his lovefor man bound him to go back to work. Home as by well, many would argue that God had a choice, and in one sense God did havea choice to create or not. But once he created, God doesn'thave a choice but to be himself. He is bound to be himself. There are some things God cannot do. That might surprise you coming from apreacher, hearing a preacher say, Hey, there's some things God can't do.There are. Ye may not have ever heard that before, but I'mgoing to tell you right now some things God can't do. God can't fail, God can't lie, God can't deny himself, God can't see him Godis perfect. By the way, these...

...are not weaknesses. The idea thatGod can't fail, that's a strength, that's a positive and God can't denyhimself. He has to be who he is. He is constrained to bewho he is. He is constrained to act as he is, and Godis love. Therefore, God must love. It is who he is. Hehas no choice but to love, to do otherwise would deny himself. Thus he was constrained to act lovingly on man's behalf. Once God chose tocreate man, knowing everything that that would breathe, he had a choice tocreate man. But once he chose to create man, he was bound tobe himself in his relationship with man,...

...and thus he was bound to loveman unconditionally. God had to go back to work because his very nature constrainedhim to do so. And so on that day, when he said toAdam, on this day that you see in didn't you will surely die.On that day God did take a life, he didn't take Adam's life. Somesay that when God said on that day you'll surely die, he wasspeaking of spiritual death. Or some say, well, he was speaking on Adam'spotential to now die. I don't think that's what scripture means when itspeaks of death. That separation of spirit from body is not in scripture.Scripture sees man as a whole spirit and soul together. And so when Godsays on that day you'll surely die,...

...he's not just speaking of spiritual death, he's not just speaking of now you have the potential to die, heis speaking of physical death as well. And yet Adam didn't die on thatday. So did God lie? Of course not. God can't deny himself. No, Adam was bound to die, but God took an innocent animal andsubstituted the animal in Adam's place to cover Adam. See Him. Itwas this death of an innocent animal, this death where the animal had doneno wrong. But on that day death was required. And so God wentback to work and he sacrificed one of his other creations on behalf of manso that man could be with God. God said man would die, andcertainly that substitute died in man's place.

God's amazing grace is seen is clearlyin this verse as in any other verse in the whole of the cannon ofscripture. Without a doubt, this work of God, he went back towork, was pointing to the work of Christ. Theologians have often categorized Jesus. When you look at the Jesus Christology, the Study of Christ. Save categorizedit into the person, fully God fully man, and the work whathe did, the work of Christ, specifically on the Cross. And whatdid Jesus say? One of the seven sayings. They're on the cross,as he died, to tell us die it is finished. What's finished? His Life? Of course not, he lives on. What was finished washis work. He had completed the work.

This verse points all the way back, or all the way forward, to the Cross and Jesus dying onthe Cross and that work being complete. For you and I, days onethrough six, God worked. Day seven through wherever. God had been restingwith his creation, but when creation sinned, it messed up or or an Adamsin it messed up creation and God had to go back to work tocover Adam's sin. That's why, when Jesus said it is finished, thisverse points to, Number One, the death of Christ in our place,an innocent one, covering our sins, atoning for our sins, and numbertwo, the work that God would do...

...so that Jesus could say it isfinished and he could enter into that eternal rest again and you and I couldhave that eternal rest as well. You and I will now enter into thateternal bless and rest for all eternity because of what Jesus did here. Hallelujah, what a savior. Well, I hope you're enjoying our study. Tomorrowwe'll be reading through genesis six through nine, genesis chapter six through nine. Iwon't encourage you as you read that, but let me close us in prayer. Father, we thank you so much again for that amazing work ofJesus Christ. Thank you pointing us to Jesus all the way back in Genesischapter three, showing us that our sins would cost the innocent life of theson of God, and showing us also...

...that, through that work, thatrest that you had created, which was interrupted by man's sin, would nowreturn so that Jesus would say the work is complete, it is finish.Lord. We look forward to that eternal rest that will have, but untilthat day comes and we be about the business of telling others of you inJesus name. Amen. Thank you for joining us. We'll see it tomorrow.
